This document outlines the policies in place affecting solar deployment.

The objective of this project is to support the City’s Green Vision, which is to ultimately ensure that 100% of the city’s electricity needs are met by renewable resources. Over a 24-moth period, the City will implement strategies to achieve a 15% increase in solar installations in San José, a 50% increased awareness and knowledge in the community, and more opportunities to purchase or invest in green power.

Esthetically Designed Municipal PV System Maximizes Energy Production and Revenue Return

In late 2008, the City of Sebastopol, CA installed a unique 42 kW grid-interactive photovoltaic (PV) system to provide electricity for pumps of the Sebastopol municipal water system. The resulting innovative Sun Dragon PV system, located in a public park, includes design elements that provide optimized electrical performance and revenue generation for the energy produced while also presenting an artistic and unique appearance to park visitors.

Showcasing Solar Technologies from San José Companies at the Tech Museum of Innovation

In May 2007, the City of San José won a Solar America Showcase award from the US Department of Energy. This award offers technical assistance to help the City realize its ambitious solar technology deployment goals on large buildings and complexes mainly in the revitalized downtown area. In July 2007, a DOE Tiger Team — led by Cécile Warner of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) — met with numerous city officials to discuss the City’s solar plans in detail and visit the various sites under consideration for solar technology adoption.
