Background

Through the renovation and revitalization of Poudre High School, an 1,800 student facility, Poudre School District expects to achieve a 30% reduction in annual energy consumption.

Background

In 2010, Poudre School District established a voter-approved building fund to conduct more than 850 projects totaling more than $120 million. Poudre High School is one of the facilities selected by the District to undergo an energy and life cycle activity analysis in addition to a building envelope assessment.

Solutions

The project at Poudre High School seeks to maintain and upgrade the school facilities, including roof replacements, updates to systems, plumbing, fire protection, and heating and ventilation systems, and improvements school grounds to extend the useful life of facilities. The District applied a whole building approach to this project, leveraging sustainable design guidelines and life cycle cost analysis. As such, project costs include a number of system replacements in addition to the selected energy conservation measures.

Solutions

Poudre School District plans to implement the following energy efficiency initiatives at Poudre High School:

  • Install new energy-efficient dishwasher, booster and steamer models: Cost $48,000
  • Remove single paned windows and potential asbestos caulking surrounding frames and replace with double paned counterparts with aluminum frames and thermal breaks: Cost $335,000
  • Replace HID lighting fixtures in large gymnasium and weight room with energy-efficient fluorescent fixtures: Cost $54,000
  • Install new electrical panel and transformer: Cost $125,000
  • Replace aging boiler with energy-efficient model: Cost $28,000
  • Install new HVAC system and system controls: Cost $4,796,000
  • Replace heating water pumps and domestic water heater with energy-efficient models: Cost $66,000
