Portfolio Energy Performance

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Staples' portfolio consists of approximately 1,700 buildings and 45 million square feet. Since 2008, Staples has improved energy performance by 10 percent. Staples’ comprehensive approach to identifying and implementing a host of energy efficiency measures has resulted in marked reduction in its portfolio-wide reduction in energy intensity.

Energy Performance by Facility

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Staples has achieved energy performance improvement of over 10% at 750 of its facilities. There are 144 facilities that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. These facilities have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Identifying Opportunities for Improvement

Facility-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. The majority of Staples' facilities have a baseline EUI value between 150 and 250 kBtu/sq. ft and show a percent improvement between 0 and 30%. Facilities with percent improvement values lower than -10% present opportunities for further investigation and improvement projects.
