Portfolio Energy Performance

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Staples' portfolio consists of more than 1,700 buildings and 45 million square feet. Since 2008, Staples has improved energy performance by 12 percent. Staples’ comprehensive approach to identifying and implementing a host of energy efficiency measures has resulted in marked reduction in its portfolio-wide reduction in energy intensity

Energy Performance by Facility

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Staples has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at more than 825 of its facilities. There are 130 facilities that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. These facilities have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Identifying Opportunities for Improvement

Facility-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Staples' portfolio consists of facilities with a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 100 to 400 kBtu/sq. ft. The majority of facilities have shown energy improvement since 2008. The facilities located near or below the 0% axis may present good opportunities for further savings.
