Portfolio Energy Performance

Better Buildings, Better Plant Challenge partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI), from a baseline year. Saint Gobain's U.S. portfolio consists of 118 facilities within three business units as of 2013. Saint Gobain's corporate energy management program includes a focus on energy assessments and energy Kaizen events, along with an on-going effort to improve monitoring and measurement of energy use through metering and submetering enhancements.

Method for Calculating Energy Performance

Saint Gobain is a large and diverse company with a mixture of facility types, including: building materials, innovative materials, glass containers manufacturing, and distribution warehousing. Each of the facilities has an energy intensity metric (source energy per unit of output) most suitable for its type of operation. These outputs include tons of material, square feet of material, and facility size in square feet. The absolute change and percent change in energy use, production output (where applicable), and energy intensity are tracked for each facility on both a monthly and annual basis. These metrics are rolled up to division-wide and corporate levels; a corporate-wide percent improvement in energy intensity is calculated by using a weighted average of the percent change in energy intensity at its facilities.
