Portfolio Energy Performance

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Lend Lease's portfolio consists of more than 42 thousand homes and 61 million square feet. Since 2008, Lend Lease has improved energy performance by 16.2 percent. Energy savings have been achieved through a focused combination of demand load reduction (EE) and generation solutions across the portfolio. Improvements are due to: green retrofits of legacy homes and enhanced design new build thermal envelope construction techniques, procurement of more energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems, and deployment of renewable energy technologies such as geothermal, solar thermal and solar PV generation. Also, a focused resident energy education and awareness program, part of utility billing, has helped reduce consumption. Over 200 green retrofit homes of the planned 1077 in SC are seeing 40% actual savings.

Energy Performance by Facility

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Lend Lease has achieved an energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at more than 10 of its facilities. There are two facilities that have experienced an increase in Source EUI; however, there was no major change in number of units online and consumption. Following an internal energy audit, the increase in Source EUI is largely attributed to under reported consumption as a result of old or faulty meters. After replacing or calibrating the faulty meters, it is believed that these homes were consuming more energy in 2008. These locations in LA and eastern NC have been targeted for onsite renewable solar energy generation (PV) and GSHP.

Identifying Opportunities for Improvement

Facility-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Lend Lease's portfolio consists of facilities with a range of baseline EUI values between 50 to 250 kBtu/sq. ft. The chart to the right shows that, since 2008, Lend Lease has achieved positive energy savings results at its highest energy using facilities. The facilities located near or below the 0% axis are good opportunities for further savings as they are targeted for further energy efficiency and generation solutions as part of Lend Lease’s comprehensive strategic energy plan.
