Portfolio Energy Performance

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Arlington's portfolio consists of approximately 60 buildings and 1.9 million square feet. Since 2009, Arlington has improved energy performance by 9 percent. Energy savings have been achieved through steady investments in cost-effective upgrades to lighting, building controls, and HVAC equipment, as well as employee education of best practices during occupancy.

Energy Performance by Facility

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Arlington has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at more than 15 of its facilities. There are 23 facilities that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. These facilities have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Identifying Opportunities for Improvement

Facility-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Arlington’s building inventory is widely varied in building type. Some are inherently energy-intensive (e.g. health facilities), while other facilities with lower energy-intensity receive attention due to their size and utility costs.
