Participate in a field test of Next Generation Luminaire downlight winners

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office is offering commercial building owners the opportunity to partner in lighting technology demonstrations featuring high-performance LED downlight luminaires. The downlight luminaires are selected from manufacturers whose products were recognized in recent Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) competitions, and preference for host sites is given to Better Buildings Alliance member facilities. Results will provide real-world data on product performance and cost effectiveness.

The first of the demonstration projects, which demonstrated NGL winning downlights in guest rooms at the Hilton Columbus Downtown, was completed in May June 2014. The LED downlights at the Hilton Columbus Downtown were selected not only to meet Hilton’s sustainability goals and LEED rating energy criteria, but also based on the desire to provide hotel guests with familiar lighting quality and operation. The LED downlights saved 46% to 50% energy compared to the CFL downlights, and provided the aesthetic appearance and dimming functionality desired. Based on general cost information, PNNL estimates that the dimmable LED downlight used ranges in price from roughly 10% less to 20% more than dimmable versions of comparable CFL downlights.
